Rhythm X 2011 Show Unveiled: ‘Stand By Me’

Just read this article on my feed from WGI.org:

Inspired by the Playing for Change project and based on the original Ben E. King song of the same name, in 2011 Rhythm X will bring 'Stand by Me' to life. Look for themes from the classic coming of age movie Stand by Me, updated for the new millennium with Rhythm X's trademark athleticism, musicality and innovation.

Rhythm X will be performing locally in the Mid-East Performance Association and nationally at the WGI Dayton Regional, Mid-South Percussion Championship and World Championships.

Rhythm X was founded in 2002 and is under the direction of Tim Jackson and Craig Dunn. In their inaugural season in WGI Independent Open Class, Rhythm X was the PIO Champion and since joining World Class has medalled six times, winning the PIW Championship in 2008 and 2009. Designing together since 2008, Tim Fairbanks, Andrew Markworth and Tim Jackson all return to the design team to bring you Rhythm X 2011... Stand by Me.

"No matter who you are... No matter where you go, in your life... at some point, you gonna need somebody... to Stand by You."

Sounds pretty cool. I can't wait to see their show come April. Check out their website for more.

Holiday Shopping?

The holiday season is upon us! It's time to start thinking about what's on your shopping list. The easiest way to avoid all the inconveniences of holiday shopping lines and crowds is to order your gifts online. But what does this have to do with this blog? Well, why not help support this site and get your holiday shopping done at the same time? I would really appreciate it if you can help support this site by using our Amazon.com search box. It's simple to use: just type the name of the product you are looking for in the Amazon.com search box and it will automatically take you to the Amazon website of the product. Simply order the gift as normal and a (tiny) fraction of what you spend will go to this site. What am I going to do with the money? Put it all back into the site to make it even better! Help me help you. (We also accept donations through PayPal, see the link on the sidebar).

Do you need a little extra cash during this holiday season? Start using the internet to your advantage to make some additional revenue. See the sidebar for the most popular sites I use to make fast money off of the internet. They're all free and easy to use. You don't have to put anything into it except a little time. Sites like Opinion Outpost pay you to take surveys online. Within a few weeks of joining you could be holding a check for $100!

Shutterbooth fun!

This doesn't really have anything to do with Percussion and Drum Stuff, I just wanted to post this video I made using the pictures taken at my recent wedding reception. What a fun way to remember our special day. If you are planning a wedding or any other large group event I highly recommend one!

Marching Band Performs the Bed Intruder Song!

This is the ending to the show that the band performed at the Sprite Battle of the Bands in Charlotte, NC on August 28, 2010.

The clip features "Imma Be" by The Black Eyed Peas and of course, the "Bed Intruder Song" by Antoine Dodson and the Gregory Brothers.

Music was arranged and taught by yours truly, and I shot some of the video as well, along with Harvey Thompson, Keon Galloway, and Kevin Greene on the BGMM Media Team. More band staff credits appear in-video.

Music arrangements were written by me using Finale 2011. Video shot with various cameras, including my trusty Canon EOS 5d mkII. Edited by me using MPEG Streamclip, Final Cut Pro, and Compressor.

Thanks everyone for all the support, keep watching!

Beat It: The World of The Modern Drummer

When John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world he quipped " He wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles". Lennon's natural put-down is typical of the way drummers are belittled within music circles.

Presenter Phill Jupitus challenges this notion with the help of a cross-section of musicians to discover how they have gained this reputation?

We hear from Clem Burke (drummer with Blondie) and Dr. Marcus Smith who together have proven scientifically that Clem burns a similar amount of calories during a concert as a premiership footballer. Phil Collins (Genesis) and Stewart Copeland (The Police), explain how they cope with the physical demands of performing and how these veterans react to the negative image of the drummer.

Having established the physical demands made on drummers does this exclude women? Dame Evelyn Glennie thinks not as she believes the physicality is not an obstacle. The programme also hears from Kenny Jones (The Small Faces, The Faces and The Who) who still features a drum solo in his set but has the drum solo had its day? Has the modern drummer discarded this indulgence and settled for keeping time at the back? If so why?

For many, the drummer is the joker in the group, Phil Selway of Radiohead explains within the ranks of Britain's moodiest band, there is not too much light hearted banter but he does see his role as a supporting one for the others to be creative.

Great show. Give it a listen.

How to Afford Drum Corp?

As many of you probably know, drum corp and indoor drumline can be a very expensive activity to participate it. So how does one afford to do drum corp? What are some ways to make a few extra bucks to help out? Well, one thing I have done to get some extra cash is by taking online surveys, like Opinion Outpost. Let's say you only make $10 a month with this site (you can make more depending on how much time you put in). If you join ten of these sites you can easily make $1200/year. Sign up and start earning today!

Need a percussion drumline composer?

I posted a little composition I wrote for the tenor drums yesterday. I also have a bunch of snare drum licks that I wrote that I will be posting soon, as well as a few cadences. I just thought I would take the time now to mention that my services are available for any drum line or band director out there that wants a crazy sweet drum break. I've got a few ideas for drum features that have never been done before (to my knowledge). Now, I don't think I could or have the time to do a complete score for a full length show (and have no experience writing one anyways) but if you need a cadence or solo section I'd be all over it (and have experience in doing so). Please comment below or email if you are interested or in need of some original drumline sheet music!!

DCI Massillon OH Show Review - August 3rd, 2010

Finally! I made it out to my first DCI show in three years! Here are the scores and a few thoughts on the eight drum corps which performed at Paul Brown Stadium (a high school stadium are you joking me?). Following is a video I shot of the Bluecoats encore performance.
8. Pioneer - 73.8 Religion and drum corp should be kept separate. Very awkward show to say the least.
7. Spirit - 80.20  Show called "Icon"
6. Troopers - 82.05Spolier alert: chick pulls out a gun at the end.
5. Blue Knights - 85.95 Never liked the Blue Knights for some reason, starting with indoor drumline.
4. Madison Scouts - 86.05 Another crowd pleasing show (standing-o) that the judges disliked.
3. Santa Clara Vanguard - 90.45 I believe this is the group with the split flam taps. Very "artsy."
2. Cadets - 92.45 Toy soldiers, very entertaining and fun to watch. Could've done without the baby sound effects though. Only four bass drums.
1. Bluecoats - 93.75 Not sure if they were really deserving to win but it was their home show. Love the snare tuning.

DCI Schedule

I took a look at the DCI schedule today. Another disappointment for me, I may not even have the opportunity to catch a show until August! That sucks. It's been so long since I've been able to see a good drum show. What shows are you planning on attending? Who are you looking forward to seeing in action this year?

Also, is there really no show in Columbus, OH this year? WTF?!

No Worlds for Me

Well, after all the traveling I have done lately I didn't make it to WGI world finals. Big time bummer. That means no new videos from me. Haven't taken any new drum videos in quite some time either. And nobody decided to follow me on Twitter for my planned updates from the competition so I am guessing it is not that big a deal to any of you. I'll guess I'll just stick to posting sheet music for now.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK IS HERE!

WGI (indoor drumline)World Championships are this Saturday! How many of you are planning on attending? Hopefully I will see you there. If you are not able to attend follow me on Twitter as I plan on continuously updating throughout the course of the day. I am also hoping on getting some in the lot video as well. I'm excited to go since last time was 2008 I believe (which wasn't too long ago but feels like forever). I just realized that I have only performed at Worlds twice, which seems odd but is a true fact, winning it all one of those times too :)

Tenor Sheet Music: Rhythm X Quad Solo 2002

Here's the quad solo for one of my favorite indoor shows of all time, Rhythm X's 2002 show "Our World." the group won Percussion Independent Open in their first year of existences and have been crushing in World class ever since. The tenor liner consisted of Tim Jackson, Adam Clemens, and Geoff Kolb, all from my Alma mater, Thomas Worthington High School. Sadly, it appears all the videos of the show have been taken down from YouTube at the moment.

*Geoff Kolb marched Matrix that year - my bad!

Video: Rhythm X 2010 "Inspired"

Here is a video I found on YouTube today of Rhythm X 2010's finals performance from the Dayton Regional on February 19th. There show is called "Inspired." Not sure what I think of it yet. I am a fan of Muse so that is cool that they are playing a few tunes off their latest record. They also have some cool visuals this year but the video doesn't do the actual playing any justice. I'll reserve judgement until I see it in person (hopefully at Worlds). Your thoughts?

A Beat for Peace

Phil Selway, of Radiohead fame, is joining other drummers from around the world to support Sudan 365. In 2011, a referendum will determine whether or not the Southern region of Sudan becomes independent from the North. Experts fear that instability in the run-up to the referendum or its aftermath could reignite a civil war and cause massive human rights abuses unless international efforts are intensified to find a peaceful path through the next 12 months.

Here’s the call-to-action video, which also features Richard Jupp of Elbow, Caroline Corr of the Corrs, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jonny Quinn of Snow Patrol, Stewart Copeland of the Police, and many more.

MCGC and a Radiohead WGI Show Videos

I went to an MCGC (Michigan Color Gaurd Circuit) indoor drumline show last year (and will hopefully be going to more this season to get some video. Wasn't too impressed with any of the shows besides NorthCoast Academy's "Echo." Everything else bordered on boring because there was nothing new to me. Here is a poor quality video of "Echo" I took. Hopefully will get more, higher quality videos up when I get a new computer. Enjoy.

I heard about another group today that is doing an all Radiohead show. That is awesome. Here is their website: http://onyourvideotape.com/

I could do without the singing but this show overall is pretty cool because they've done a few things I haven't seen before, plus that snare solo at the end is pretty sweet. And I love that they squeezed in part of "Let Down" as that is one of my favorite songs of all time.
